Do I have to be in good shape before I start?
No, you will get into shape as you train. We have a series of exercises that you will learn as you progress through the ranking system which will enable you to perform the all the self defense techniques. If everyone waited until they were in "perfect" shape to join jiu-jitsu, no one would start!
I am in my 40's, am I too old to start Jiu-Jitsu?
No, you are not too old to begin Jiu-Jitsu training. We regularly have students start in their 40's and older. Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a practical and effective art that is based on technique, rather than speed and strengh. Our structure and curriculum are designed to allow for everyone to continue training well into their 60's and even 70's!
What is the difference between Gracie University and other BJJ schools?
At Gracie University, we focus on three things that are not comonly focused on at other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Schools.
I am very busy with my work schedule, how much time do I need to devote to Jiu-Jitsu classes?
Two classes per week are the recommended minimum. As you progress through the ranks you may choose to train more often, 3 - 5 days a week. Either way, a little training is far better than no training at all.
How long does it take to get a black belt?
It takes approximately 8 to 10 years to reach black belt with a high level of dedication. But, as we always say, don't worry about the belt, enjoy the journey.
